Game #2 - Davis Vipers vs Bear River Valley Rockets
Prior to Saturday's game the Davis Vipers have played the Bear River Rockets 5 times. The Vipers have been victorious in every meeting. Although, those following the rivalry know, that doesn’t tell the whole story. Every game has been a battle. Most have come down to the wire & won in the last minute or two of the games... Well, Saturday was no different..!
With a defensive clinic from both teams in the first half...The first score didn’t come until late in the 3rd quarter as the Rockets got on the board first with a long run up the gut. The Viper "D" toughened up & prevented the 2pt conversion attempt as the Rockets ended the 3rd with a 6-0 lead. Down for the first time in the game, the Viper offense started to get er going & found #19 Aaron Dickler for the score. First year kicker #13 Colton Cook, made the PAT (his first attempt this year), which ended up being the difference on the scoreboard.
Late in the 4th, on a tip drill play, the Rockets scored & took the lead. With minutes left in the game, the game on the line... the Viper O, marched down the field, & punched it in with Devon Holbrook. The 1 pt lead, left the Vipers opting for 2 which the Rockets stopped.
With approx 2 minutes left in the game, the Bear River squad had one more chance to win the game..... the problem.... The Viper D wasnt having it. Putting pressure on Jenkins, & with no where to throw.... the Rockets turned the ball over on downs, leaving the O to kneel out the clock.
In what has been a very good rivalry the past 3 seasons the Vipers now lead the series 6-0. This was a hard fought win, with outstanding play from the Defense. LB Kevin Slater #44 had 2 INTS on the day, as SS Chris Norton #25, & CB #31 Matt Peterson both had picks as well. LB Tony Belford #56 was "locking it down" in the middle, and LB Jeff Hancock #40 had a stellar day as well.
Offensively, the Vipers again got off to a slow start but really seemed to come alive late in the game. QB Steve Waelty spread the ball around a little more Saturday, as some key receptions were made by WR #15 Schuyler Sherwood, & #26 Colby Cook. Waelty showed his legs some Sat as well, running for a couple key 1st downs to keep the chains moving.
The Big fellas up front, were laying some wood most of the day as well. The battles in the trenches were noticed on both sides, as there was plenty of hitting going on, from the O line, & D line.
The "W" is nice but, the Vipers must immediately prepare to travel Juan Diego next week to meet the 2-0 Utah Wolverines, fresh off a big win over Cache Valley Sat.
